After attending the Womxn Who Rock's 10th Anniversary virtual UnConference, Ofrendas For The Future, I truly felt inspired by the different ofrendas that were presented and the words and the authenticity of each of the panelists. The one thing that I truly loved about the panel with Ofelia Esparza and Rosanna was the different odrendas that they had showcased and created for communities. One thing that I extremely admired and think needs to be acknowledged is truly asking the communities what exactly they want to see and what would they like to see being represented on these altars as well. I think that this event happened in a time in our country where so many people are hurting and seeing these ofrendas really caused me to sit and reflect on the injustices that are occurring in our country as well as internationally against black bodies and brown bodies as well. Ofrendas are used as empowerment and are a major form of healing and provides a space for people to express their hurt, pain, and a variety of emotions in a way that they feel comfortable. Right now, we are in energy are shifting and there is a place needed for all people to truly just get connected with spirit and their own ancestors. Guidance and support is needed from those who have come before us during this very difficult time and I truly believe that this event provided the space for us to express those feelings and to know that our emotions are valid and is a true form of healing for so many people.
I would like to take the time to acknowledge the life's of people who have been taken away from this earth simply because they are seen as different. Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Sandra Bland, Walter Scott, Terrence Crutcher, Atatiana Jefferson, Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Philando Castile, Samuel Dubose, and the hundreds of other names that are sadly included on a long list of lives lost.
Black lives matter, Black children matter, Black trans people matter, Black woman matter, Black FUTURES matter and they all matter today, tomorrow, and every day after that.
