GWSS Individual Blog Post #1

In this weeks readings, I found everything about Alice Bag's story incredibly touching. As early as the age of nine years old I remember punk rock music resonating with me more than anything in the world. Growing up I assumed it was simply preference, and did not correlate it as a coping mechanism for being a Mexican immigrant, trying to make sense of a complicated family life, exposed to two different cultures at once.
A part of me has always felt a bit ashamed of how big of a role punk has played in my life, simply because I never felt like that realm of music was for young, brown women. Alice's quote in professor Habell Pallan's article- "I don't know if you're familiar with ranchera music but it's very emotional and big" makes me realize how punk and ranchera hold very powerful messages that can explain myself being attracted to punk, after only being exposed to ranchera as a kid. As Gayle Wald said in her article, "Biography can be critical and it can be feminist. It can shed light on women's lives while questioning the historical apparatuses that have eluded them". This notion of documenting the stories, inspirations and processes behind women in music has just become of greater value to me. While there are already so many reasons to brining light to these stories, these stories can help someone understand their own own relationship with music.
I have attached "Everybody Wants To Love You" to this blog post becuase of the main artists' dedication to adding her culture into modern day indie rock. I am a big fan of her work, and have been able to read about her own struggle of trying to fit into the music scene while incorporating part of her cultural identity into her music. Finally, I have attached Destruye Y Huye into the queue because of their unapologetically punk and Latino work.
It can be
very hard to discern the difference between self-
celebration and self-abuse.
