GWS Blog Post 1

1     In this week’s readings we talk about an artist that goes by the name of Alice Bags and she was a head turner. Alice had a unique style to her work as she came from a Latin background but she was a punk rock all-star! When I say all-star, I mean she did things big and that’s what made her amazing in her own words she would be “emotional and big”. As Alice was a star there were issues that she ran into with her being Latin she was looked at differently because she did punk. During this time punk was looked at as (white people) music, so it didn’t really make sense that a Latina was out there screeching to the world her war cry on the mic. I think that a lot of this has to do with perception, as people look to music as an important thing in their lives I think the character of the person that is singing the songs is just as important to them. This is something that I have seen before though for example the rapper Eminem who is super famous got a lot of hate because he is a white man that raps and a lot of them are angry raps. The black community struggled with this concept because society portrays that white people live easy lives. Another one that has been looked at differently is Lil Nas who is a country singer who is black and gay. People have tons of issues with that because country is looked at as a white music genre and sexuality plays a big role in our society these days.
