In the Final Chorus: Planet Rock by Kevin Young an important point is brought to light about "memory itself is a technology- our common metaphors for memory may change, but have included "the tape" or even "the record" whose very name indicates on the archive"(312). Kevin goes on to further say how his dad saw breakdancing on tv and said "thats just what we used to call alligator dancing"(312). What this means is that music continues to be reused because of our memory. This is an important point because when a tape is played too much "you see the other side bleeding through"(312). This is important because when it comes to African American music it always gets reused but they are given no credit for their work. This is why there is artist like Beyonce who proudly embrace their roots and issues such as the black lives matter movement through her album Lemonade. In an interview for The Record Close to Home a Conversation about Beyonce's Lemonade Regina Bradley said that she thinks that what make people uncomfortable about Beyonce's album was that she "was not only pulling from a blues tradition, but a southern black women's blues tradition." What this means is that she was bringing up a movement without hiding the roots and not like other artist do like Kevin Young said when "bleeding through." The public is still very racist when it comes to anything especially music and they do not want to accept it when it's different to their ideas. I support Beyonce even more for using her platform to support the black lives matter music and movement.
DJ Selections:
Y la culpa no era mía: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPZ7ad7up8M
This song is related to the readings because although it was a different movement, this song created a movement to end sexual harassment and sexual assault on women who constantly get ignored when they try to report such behavior.
Calibre 50-El inmigrante: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9zLchnWQcs
This song also relates to the readings because similar to Beyonce Calibre 50 is trying to bring awareness to a different issue which is the treatment of undocumented immigrants in the United States.
