Ofrendas for the Future Reflection

Womxn Who Rock Conference Reflection

This celebration of the Womxn Who Rock's 10th Anniversary virtual UnConference, Ofrendas For The Future, was special. It was able to capture the cultural knowledge and power all of these women have. It was lovely to see the "stage" so full of womxn, all of which who spoke with poise and dignity and whose voices were never overpowered by a man's voice. The conversation, mainly the Q&A was thoughtful and incredibly thought-provoking. There was a special focus on how the particularities of the event both COVID and the March for Justice had changed the expression of unity, strength, and resilience as a community. With the online platform, there was an incredible amount of creative expression. The event was well organized and made me hopeful for the future as we move forward. This set an example of how we can honor and discuss meaningful events and transgressions in this digital age. The altars and ofrendas that were showcased were mind-blowing representations of the "cosmic" individuals they focused upon. The community that participated, I think specifically of the University of Washington community and students, thoroughly impressed me. I will end with the quote, "people need to know that they are not far from healing." This was said during the panel and was incredibly moving to me, particularly as we sit in the place we do right now. The love and respect was palpable during the event. Everyone was supportive of the community at hand and individuals.
