Reflection on Virtual Ofrendas for the Future Conference

I really enjoyed my time at the Ofrendas For the Future Virtual Conference. Personally, I
didn’t know what to expect before logging on, but I loved how we started the conference
by acknowledging the issues that have been presented this week and thanking the land that
we are all standing on. I think taking those moments in the day for reflection and
appreciation really brightens your day and opens your mind.
One of the things I really enjoyed about the conference was the constant references
to spirituality and beliefs. I loved how when the altars were being described, it was
described as being in front of an altar is to be in the presence of a sacred space.
The process of creating and presenting an altar is a process of healing and remembering
not simply a decoration. One Altar that really stood out to me was the one made for Peace
with the dove(I believe) in the center and how they asked people who were passing by it
to write a message of peace. I think those little efforts are able to create social change
within a community and create a sense of togetherness in such a hateful world.

Being a very spiritual and religious person, I really connected to what the panelists
were saying and loved hearing about how different people represent their heritages and
cultures. For example, one panelist talked about how people in her community do not talk
about a person for a year after their death while they go from their journey from the
physical to spiritual world. Another panelist talked about how tattoos in her culture were
symbols of where you were from and connect you to your ancestors. Learning about these
different cultures allows me to open my mind and promotes more peace in the world
and less hate.
