AFRAM individual post 3

The reading that was the most interesting in my opinion was Garrison's "U.S Feminism Grrl style." I have studied the first and second wave of feminism in history classes and have understood that even in the third wave there has been a dominating influence by white women and a lack of intersectionality. I also found it very interesting how the word "Grrrl" was actually a refutation of the word girl and how it was used to demean women and make them feel unimportant or childish. This was reaffirmed by Garrison who stated that "when it is not being used to describe a woman under sixteen, the word "girl" often takes on pejorative, infantilizing overtones, suggesting, silliness, weakness or, insubstantiality."(Garrison,1)  From a male perspective it was interesting to read how the author described how society stole the "naughty, confident, curious" nature of young girls when they reached adolescence and were forced to assimilate to cultural expectations. Obviously I had a different experience so this reading allowed me to gain a new perspective on my own inherent male privilege. Furthermore the reading touched on the third wave feminist movement as a whole and how the scope expanded and the definition of gender changed as well. Garrison also spoke about the immense importance of technology in allowing feminism to spread when she cited a girl who stated: "our networking through mail, the internet, through music, through zines and through the punk scene keeps us closely knit and strong." (Garrison, 153) This demonstrates how through education and communication, messages of social justice are able to be transmitted widely.

Despite his troubled past, XXXtentacion is an artist who reminds me of the emotionally charged lyrics  that are heard in punk music. I do not know enough about punk to offer a dialogue but I am aware of the outside influences that it has had on rap music.

I do not know any punk artists or music but I am familiar with the influences that alternative music has had on the hip hop genre. Artists such as Juice Wrld are referred to as "rappers" however much of their music is more reflective of punk, rock and pop genres especially when it comes to the vocals. This song is called Lucid Dreams by Juice WRLD
