AFRAM Post #4

Blog Post:

The first reading that I found very appealing was  Country Music is also Mexican Music by Ludwig Hurtado. In this writing Ludwig mentions how "we take for granted that country music sounds white, looks white, in many ways, is white"because it was never the case. the American culture is not a thing, and it was based on the Mexican culture. So many things that are now called "American" were taken from the Mexican culture. This is very frustrating, especially with the current government where people are claiming "America first" forgetting where the whole country came from. She added how “in the 1920’s, early forms of country music were born out of honky ton, which was adapted from ragtime but also heavily influence by Mexican ranchera music.” Those are just simple example of how Mexican culture and music have impacted County music, and it takes back the narrative correcting the story of the people whom the system have exploited.

The reading that really spoke to me this week was Finally, Filmmakers Tell the Forgotten History of Seattle DIY Self-Defense Group Home Alive. Laina Dawes interviews Michaels and Therrien about the way they DIY their film and the frustration of the way Zapata's story has been forgotten. They talk about how "[they] found that it was really weird, like there was this lack of history talked about that no one of our generation knew about." Zapata's story was very much erased and the next generation completely forgot about the traumatizing event that happened to her. They redone what self defense is and that personal care is a big part of selfdefense and making yourself feel safe. Zoe Bermet added that "anything you can do to feel good about yourself and feel strong about yourself is going to make you feel safer."Music is a way to make yourself feel better. Choosing music that makes you happy is a big part of also feeling better and safe. The last part of this reading that really lifted me up was the fact that they DIY'ed everything themselves. This is amazing that they put their whole being in their work and accomplished something breathtaking.
