It's interesting how words can vary in meaning from culture to culture. "The word "punk" itself has many meanings, and is a term some have called intentionally slippery. Might the black vernacular meanings of "punk", somewhere between a curse word and worse- a word some have equated with "sissy", but may best approximate "queer". (Young, pg. 327) White bands have associated the word punk for defiance, whereas black culture has associated the term with gay culture, which is interesting how vernacular works in the shapes of genres of music.

It's compelling how music and genres can be used as a platform for listeners to associate themselves and their music to express their cultures, movements, and exposure to injustice. "We who watch these daily tragedies unfold on our phones and laptops and cable news watch from afar but feel the sad heaviness of what it means to experience one's blackness as precarious and unprotected, as eviscerated of its citizenship."
