Wednesday May 20th, 2020 For this weeks reading, the connection that I made between the music video "This is America" by Childish Gambino and the video "Lemonade" by Beyonce were that both artist are African American that talk about the problems that are going on in America. However, they are both seen in a different point of view. Both have different perspectives of what is seen in America. Childish Gambino uses his music video to showcase the problems in America as an African American. Whereas Beyonce uses her music video to showcase the problems in America as an African American feminist.
Childish Gambino is an African American who is known for his music. Some favorites are "3005" and "Redbone". For this discussion we will be focusing on his music video for "This is America". In this music Childish Gambino shows these problems that many African Americans face living this country. In the very beginning of the music video, we see a man tied up in a chair that has his face covered. The song starts with happy singing from a choir. When the beat drops, Childish Gambino is seen with a gun and executes the man in the chair while saying "This is America". Throughout the whole songs it shows some kind of violence and showing that America responds by recording with their phones.
Beyonce shows more of her feminist side. In her video "Lemonade" she explains a little bit about her life and what she goes through. She describes how she was able to overcome it through the power of music and feminism. Beyonce talks about how her husband, Jay-Z, cheated on her addressing all African American males are cheaters. Most of her songs are about how woman are empowered and strong. Her focus is showing how she doesn't need a man to make her feel strong or to run the world.
Here are some songs that are similar to this weeks reading:
