Ofrendas For The Future: Reflection

Monique Sternik

The webinar Ofrendas for the Future was filled with amazing women and role models. I personally enjoyed this conversation greatly! The alters were absolutely stunning and this webinar reiterated the importance of community. During this very difficult time in history, I personally was amazed by the call to action. All these speakers voiced the importance of understanding justice within our communities. They were constantly addressing the current events of the protests and the search for freedom.
Alters are a method of coming together to seek justice and mindfulness. It takes resilience and perseverance to examine how our past affects the future. Within this webinar, I found the various ways ofrendas can be utilized and expressed. Rosanna Esparza Ahrens and her mother made absolutely amazing alters in their life. I personally found the alters made on individual persons were absolutely stunning and meaningful. These alters are used as bridges that connects our feelings and our histories. Additionally, I also found it amazing they participated in the movie Coco. As cultural advisors I saw that they wanted to ensure that the movie was done right. Ofrendas have so much more meaning than anyone could ever imagine. To each individual one, ofrenda could mean countless things. It could be a place to pray, reflect, remember, or even connect. This webinar treated tradition as sacred. People use different methods to embark in cultural practices and so they can recharge and reflect. I loved the use of healing and mindfulness through dance and song. It was truly beautiful. Even the collection of alters on the website showed the amount of diversity we have in our communities.
