AFRAM #3

This week, I feel like we really looked at songs and artists that truly broke the “mold” and the norms of society, and brought upon a new view to society and music. Bringing a new community of individuals to the limelight.
In Ryan Moore’s article it says, “Nirvana’s success represented a major breakthrough for the
kind of music that had been performed in local music scenes...and bohemian enclaves...during the
previous decade.” I think this quote shows how this indie culture and “rebellious” genre had
previously existed but since it was not mainstream it was brushed off. However, with the success of
Nirvana, they brought this new community to light, people who were not perfect and had issues. I
think everyone in the industry always wanted this picture perfect experience but these bands brought
out the sides of individuals not so pretty, which was revolutionary, giving rise to other indie and
alternative bands.
In Alice Bag’s Violence Girl, she describes her ‘Bag Parade’ on Sunset Boulevard and how,
“even those rockers who considered themselves too cool to care leaned over to find out who we
were.” When I read this, I immediately thought of the shows like The Voice or The Masked Singer
who employ this ‘masking’ idea that I feel Bag pioneered. Going on stage with a bag over her head
broke the norms of women doing their face and looking pretty for a show. Broke the idea of the
“female” singer and allowed her simply to show off her skills as a musician. Therefore again
allowing new communities, the women who didn’t care to always conform to the standard of beauty,
feel empowered.

The two songs I have chosen this week are I don't wanna dance by Hey Monday and Heaven Knows

by The Pretty Reckless because I feel like when I was in middle school(when these songs came out)
they made me feel super empowered and brought out my pre-teenage angst that I feel like these songs
also did in their time, generate movement amongst people.
