AFRAM 337

The historical narrative around abuse against women has shaped how collective society treats women. Specifically, the continuous discrimination against women, albeit more subtle now, leads to further suffering for the next feminist generation. However, the start of Riot Grrls evolved into an entire movement about social feminist issues.

In "Nirvana", the reading states many performances attempted to "expose the links between commercial objectification and girls' body image, presenting statistics about eating disorders and self-esteem with complementary illustrations that debunked or parodied media representations of beauty, sexuality, and femininity" (Moore 128). Young women struggle with their body image and feel the need to compare themselves to others in order to measure their value adjacent to their counterpart. Thus, women develop eating disorders and self-esteem issues due to how society objectifies them.

The reading, "U.S. Feminism Grrl Style", states that young U.S. girl and women are too busy "preoccupied with themselves to be interested in being political and loud" (Garrison 143.

These readings discuss the issues that a majority of females identify with, also with smaller issues that weren't discussed in the readings. The two following music videos embody female empowerment and encourages all women to practice self-love:
