AFRAM Blog Post #3

Caroline Roe

This week encompassed the idea of artists using their voices to break the mold. Ryan Moore brings to the table this idea of "creative capitalism" (Moore) and the idea of Riot Grrl was also highlighted (Garrison). This was a time where the term "thinking outside the box" became popular. As discussed by Moore, this neoliberalism time period led to people looking for meaning and reason in their work. People strived for more than the 9-5, leading to this idea of gig-labor. The main point is that artists strived for that meaning through difference, authenticity, and rebellion (Moore). In Moore's article it is quoted that, "it seems like everywhere else punk and metal were such diametric opposites, and like everywhere else there were fights between metal heads and punk rockers. But in Seattle they kind of coexisted peacefully" (Moore 121). This idea that Seattle is a breeding ground and foundation for artists to find that rebellion and join music genres. This was a time of creative freedom. Also in the spectrum is Garrison's breakdown of the Riot Grrl world. This word "Grll" is "intended to recall the naughty, confident, and curious 10-year-olds we were before society made it clear it was time to stop being loud and playing with boys" (Garrison 141). Both the idea of "creative capitalism" and "Riot Grrrl"are artists breaking the molds of patriarchy and sexism within the music industry. I think there are many parralells from this time period to today. Today, there is a huge push for equality within all aspects of life regarding race and gender and I think people are doing that in unique and rebellious ways that push the boundaries and require "thinking outside the box." The parralells from history to today show how with time new doors are opened, opportunities are presented and norms are changed. Though things are still changing, artists during the the "creative capitalist" movement and introduction of the Riot Grrrl have moved the dial and created the opportunities.
