`My experience with Grunge music didn't come until about 2003. My niece who is older than me was in her senior year in high school when I first heard her listening to Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana. Keep in mine my only acknowledgement of Nirvana was that the lead singer committed sucide. i wasn't the most open person to other genre of music outside my world. I was so intune with hip-hop and R&B music because it was my culture and when you a kid you don't pay attention to the influence of other genre of music outside of rap artist sampling rock songs and such nature. But in 2003 I started to see that a group like Nirvana was relatable to black youth who were open to other genres of music as my niece is. I asked her personally why was she so attracted to their music? She responded by saying she was a pretty angsty kid at that time. Then I googled what angst means and realize its fear and anxiety that she relates to. I did as well once I listen on my own and I realized how much anxiety is a feeling that becomes this relatable to everyone and Nirvana is a big reason I personally think it is such a common thing. I think about hip-hop artist like Scarface who music was the definition of anxiety and I thought about artist today like Kid Cudi who has a big influence talking about the subject of anxiety and depression.
