GWSS 241 Blog Post #2

The main focus of the readings coming from Tuesday's work has to do with women’s roles in hip-hop throughout the years. The reading from Thursday focuses specifically on hip-hop in Seattle over the years. Tuesday we read about women in the 70’s/80’s going through struggles to be recognized as contributing factors in the hip-hop movement and popularizing the objectification of women. In “Histories and ‘Her Stories’ from the Bronx,” the author discusses the lack of awareness surrounding women in hip hop early on and how it has created masculinity in the culture, “With women's roles erased and women's narratives stifled, one might listen to the "official" creation story of hip hop and think that it is therefore no wonder that hip hop developed into an overtly masculine cultural form. Even if we think beyond rap music and incorporate the other elements of hip hop; dance, graffiti art and fashion, a cursory glance at mainstream hip hop confirms the notion that this is an aggressively masculine cultural product.” When looking at the article from Thursday’s reading you can see this masculinity and lack thereof women hip-hop influence when all of these big names out of Seattle over the years are listed and very few, if any, are women artists.
Another thing that stands out to me is the same objectification of women that is talked about in tuesday’s readings is present in thursday's article as one of the most popular songs in Seattle history. Sir Mix-a-Lot’s “Baby got Back” definitly becomes a controvisial topic because even though Mix-a-Lots purpose in making the song was to push against the body shaming happening during the time for women with a certain body type, one could argue there is still major objectification towards women both in the song and in the video.

Two songs that promote women empowerment, I really like the rapsody song :)
