Emily White in The Great Indie Debate talks about what it means to be a true indie. They talked about how in order to be a true indie, you should not buy into becoming a star. She said something very meaningful when referring to Olympia, which was known to be very indie, that "what happened to Cobain was a rock star dream-come-true, but in Olympia, for instance, that dream was something to rebel against." This place for indie was also the place where a lot of riot grrrl bands came to express themselves and be free of the standards and the rules of the world around them. The same message was given my Mimi Nguyen's It’s (Not) a White World: Looking for Race in Punk, she states that "riot grrrl critically interrogated how power, and specifically sexism, organized punk." She talks about the political aspect of the Riot Grrrl taking back control and asking for the respect that they deserve. Though the Riot grrrl brought with it a voice for many girls, it also brought a lot of disparities as Nguyen states "unfortunately, riot grrrl often reproduced structures of racism, classism, and (less so) heterosexism in privileging a generalized “we” that primarily described the condition of mostly white, mostly middle-class women and girls." There is no way we can talk about gender alone when it comes to our society. There is a high level of intersectionality in the way women are seen. Being a woman is not the only aspect o most people, there are a lot of women who do not fit in the privilege description of what a woman is across the country. While Riot Grrrl has done so much to shift the perception of women in society, there was a lot of room for more to promote the heterogeneity of the country we live in.
A song that truly resonates with me regarding this theme is Run The World (Girls) by Beyonce https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBmMU_iwe6U
The second song that I saw resonate with the theme is Confident by Demi Lovato: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwLRQn61oUY
I truly live by those two songs. They truly represent my opinion when it comes to women's power. There are so many more that resonate with the same message. I think there is still a lot of work that needs to be done and a lot of diversity that needs to be represented.
