Hip Hop is a genre that I am a fond of because of the sick beats that make one want to dance. However, as much as I appreciate the beats, some of the lyrics are always objectifying women. As a matter of fact, hip hop feminism is movement that I admire for empowering women especially women of color and liberating them of being treated as objects. Histories and “her stories” from the Bronx:excavating hidden hip hop narratives Sharpley-Whiting says the formula for hip hop videos are “numerous scantily clad young black and Latino women whose rear rends and breast fill almost every frame”(3). This exposes and reaffirms that women of color are treated as eye candy for men instead of actually seeing any other qualities in them. This is what hip hop feminism seeks to change. In The Stage Hip-Hop Feminism Built: A New Directions Essay Aisha Durham, Brittney C. Cooper, and Susana M. Morris spotlight how hip hop feminism “insist on living with contradictions, because failure to do so relegates feminism to an academic project that is not politically sustainable beyond the ivory tower” (4). This means that in order to make this movement successful than the opposing side needs to be present in order to deconstruct their ideas. Furthermore, they talk about how heteronormative institutions are unquestionable still present specially with the LGBTQ community because when Frank Ocean said “had fallen in love with a man” he got praised (6). On the contrary, Nicki Minaj came out as bisexual and had backlash. Now a days this type of toxic masculinity is still present and women of color keep being sexualized. What is important to note is that times are changing and there is artist like Bad Bunny that want to change that.
Missy Elliot- Where They From https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ys0sh0MRUZA
- This song relates back to what is mentioned in the articles because Missy Elliot is all about women being able to express themselves without being called derogatory terms. This song is the epitome of women empowerment.
Bad Bunny- Yo Perreo Sola https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtSRKwDCaZM
- This song is my anthem! Besides that, it is all about women being able to dance however they want to without men wanting to sexualize them. In his music video he has women of all different skin colors sitting in thrones. This exactly how they should be portrayed as, like queens. Not as objects, as the readings mention they are constantly portrayed as.
